- Background:
Started by T.W.
Samuel in 1840 in Nelson County, Makers Mark is one of the most widely known Kentucky Bourbon brands, the telltale red wax is
unmistakable in the industry. A history Kentucky Bourbon Whisky
(note the spelling), Maker's Mark is rich in tradition and is known for
it's excellent bourbon. The "mark" on the label tells part
of the story. The star signifies Star Hill Farm, home of the
distillery. The "S" signifying Samuel Family who devised
the recipe. Lastly the "IV" signifying the 4 generation of
Samuels (according the Bill Sr. this is actually VI). Due to the
families roots in Scotland and much of what they brand stands for today
being influenced by Scotch distilling, whiskey is actually spelling in
with the Scottish spelling of "whisky". Makers Mark is distinct
in that the recipe is based on locally grown corn and malted barley
coupled with gentle winter wheat – not the traditional and harsher
grain, rye. Maker’s Mark is currently the only operating bourbon
distillery to make whisky in batches of less than 19 barrels -- the
traditional standard for small-batch whisky. The low wine is
distilled off at 120 proof, while the high wine is 130 proof and the
bourbon is double distilled, all of which gives it it's distinct
mellow and smooth taste.
