- Background:
Bernheim Wheat Whiskey is the first and only wheat whiskey available in
the United States since prohibition. It is named after the history
Bernheim Distillery in which Heaven Hill distillers all of their
whiskeys. This whiskey represents the first truly new
American Whiskey style to be introduced in generations. The use of
wheat instead of corn in this recipe results in a full-bodied, sweet,
but very smooth whiskey Wheat Whiskey is a type of straight
whiskey that must contain 51% of a single type of grain, in this case
soft winter wheat, plus a combination of other grains. Additionally
it must age a minimum of two years in a new charred white oak
barrel. Bernheim Wheat Whiskey is different from Bourbon in that
to be called a Bourbon, at least 51% of the grain used in making the
whiskey must be corn. Wheated Bourbons such as Maker's Mark
and Old Fitzgerald in that those Bourbons adhere to all of the laws
governing Bourbon, but use a small amount of wheat in place of rye in
their mashbill.
